A VW Collection That Puts a Smile on Your Face and a Story in Your Heart

Funbugz is a VW collection devoted to our love of all things Volkswagen. It's the perfect hang-out for the Vee-dub lover. Here and now (hatching as we speak) is an interview with our totally addicted founder, Reagh (pronounced, “ray”).

We are delighted to share his VW collection stories with you the fabulous, Friends of Funbugz.

Everyone, meet “Reagh”! He's about to take you on a 20 year ride. A Volksie-extravaganza of sorts. Here is the story of his wall to wall Volkswagen lifestyle and how it all started.

VW Collection Grows Quickly

It didn’t matter where I went or who I talked to, Vee-dub kept coming up. So, ignoring all common sense or logic, I began bringing them all home. One by one, (ok some days more than one). The collection grew, both in size and diversity. I found lots of new die cast toys and models and just a few HotWheels or Matchbox items. A trip to the antique store would uncover a couple of 1960's toys and some clever Volkswagen ads from an old magazine. Honey, I'm home! Make more room.

Naturally I would need a suitable vehicle to transport all these new treasures safely. At least that's the story I used to convince the wife that we needed a full sized VW bus. A 1969 blue panel bus became the newest member of our family. Even my 3 sons loved it. “Cool Dad” was their response.

Over the next ten years, many more real size VW’s found their way into our family/collection, along with thousands of other items. Everything from toys , artwork, memorabilia, post cards, magazines, books, movies, posters, key-chains, mugs, pens and pencils, Barbie and Herbie, clothing, lamps and even old car parts! Not to forget the real size beetles, buses and notchback, to name a few.

Volkswagen items of all shapes and sizes could be found throughout our house and garage. By this time everyone that knew me, thought I was becoming a bit BUGGY. But that didn’t stop them from bringing me more unique items that they'd found somewhere in their travels. My VW collection seemed to always bring a smile.

Then there was the stories. Everyone I met or knew seemed to have a connection to the world of VW. Everyone had a story. Whether it was their first car or a memorable trip in a camper van they needed to share every detail with me. I loved every minute.

At one point my collection filled an entire 1800 square foot shop on our property. In an odd twist the Hydro meter lady made a comment as she wove around my Volkswagen lifestyle. “You should put all this on display and let the world see it”. Wow, what a concept!

In that moment my collecting journey took on a whole new direction. I imagined a “think small” museum of all things Volkswagen. Then in 2010 Funbugz opened in a 4000 square foot space in the hub of Coombs, BC Canada.

It became obvious to us that the only highway big enough for all of Funbugz was the Information highway otherwise known as the world wide web. My hope is one day to have a space large enough to display the now over 3500 items big and small. In the meantime, enjoy funbugz.com. The journey has really just begun...
