The Volkswagen Bus - Peace, Love and Junk Like That!
Whether your
Volkswagen bus
is a pristine original, fully restored classic or a slammed down rusty relic, I know that you're part of a wonderful world full of joy, heartaches and slow hills. The Volkswagen bus is technically known as the type 2 in the VW lineup. It was originally conceived by Ben Pon as a cargo hauler.

In Europe it is commonly known as the Bulli, but to the rest of the world it was just a bus or microbus. Within the type 2 family, its cousin is the transporter or pickup. The popularity of the Volkswagen bus exploded all over the world. Its simplicity, dependability and diversity made it a smart choice for the practical crowd. From the middle 50’s to the present day, it has had a faithful and sometimes fanatical following. Just last year, a restored microbus sold at the famous Barrett Jackson Auction for over $200,000! Believe it or not, from its original price of approx. $2500 to a value of $200,000, it is still a good value. Consider that, in the Collector Car world, it is not uncommon to pay a million dollars or more for a classic. Out of this world eh? Back here on planet Earth, the rest of us will continue to use the bus for more simple reasons, like pure pleasure and the feeling of belonging to a very special fraternity of bus lovers. I know this club exists, because every time I take one of my buses out for a cruise, I have to give “the two fingered wave” (peace sign) to each and every one that I pass on the road.

And just like all large organizations, there are levels of achievement and recognition. The beginner level is called Vanagon. The next level up is commonly called “Bay Window” and the top of the ladder is the elite group called “Splitty”. There's one extra group that has spun off from all 3, and that group is commonly known as the “Westies”. You have probably heard about their big claim to fame……….Woodstock.

Yes the flower power generation adopted the westy microbus as one of their symbols of peace and love. To this day, the psychedelic painted microbus is recognized by all and still brings a warm smile and fuzzy feeling to most of us.

Really Fuzzy to some and you know who you are. For those who missed the Woodstock happening, the VW Westy is also known for millions of miles of adventure and pure outdoor pleasure.

Campgrounds in every corner of the world are still graced by the presence of the iconic Westphalia and the beautiful people that drive them.
